The U.S. Economy Recovering from Near Disaster—An Analogy

You are a passenger on an airplane in the hands of an incompetent pilot and flight crew.  The entire flight has been turbulent and erratic, with no apparent flight plan and no clear destination.  But now the situation is critical:  The plane has been rapidly losing altitude for several minutes and is plunging out of control toward the ground.  A crash seems imminent.

One of the passengers, who is a pilot with some experience flying somewhat smaller planes, steps forward and assures the passengers and flight attendants that he can pull the plane out of its descent and avert disaster.  There is a sense of  “the fierce urgency of now,” and the passengers overwhelmingly accede to having this dubiously qualified volunteer take command of the plane.

Our would-be-hero picks a few of his comrades on the flight to serve as his flight crew, and with the consent and blessing of the original pilot and crew (who are most grateful to be “off the hook,” for whatever good it might do them), the new team takes command of the plane.

The plane has plummeted from its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet to a mere 2,000 feet.  For passengers looking out the windows, it is evident that the situation is dire.  But only by sitting at the controls and seeing the instrument data can the true severity of the situation be known.

Given the laws of physics, the best the passengers can at all reasonably hope for is that the new team, through some extraordinary, and perhaps risky, maneuvers can...

The difficulty of the situation is compounded by most of the passengers suffering from severe cases of motion sickness.  As the new pilot and crew are working furiously to rapidly slow the rate of descent, they must also have the flight attendants attend to the health of the passengers.

Somehow, the new team succeeds in reducing the rate of descent, manages to achieve level flight, and seems to even have the plane back into an ascending pitch.

Any sane and rational person would appreciate that a plane can descend from 35,000 feet to 2,000 feet much more rapidly than it can ascend from 2,000 feet back up to 35,000 feet.  And any sane and rational person in our scenario, in spite of the residual feelings of malaise and trauma, even exacerbated by the on-going motion sickness, would appreciate achieving level flight after coming so close to disaster, and, therefore, would be expected to exercise considerable patience and resilience with respect to the plane resuming cruising altitude.

That is, any sane and rational person—which would likely exclude anyone who has been consuming mind-numbing substances, such as ideological tea.
